Quick answer: During a Korean summer, I head first to the sunscreen and sheet-mask aisles at Olive Young. I look for lotion-like sunscreen, lightweight tone-up SPF, cooling sheet masks, and portable deodorant wipes. I usually avoid thick creams that feel heavy in humid weather.

Summer in Korea changes the way I choose beauty products.
When the air becomes hot and humid, I do not want to feel several layers sitting on my face. Even a product that feels rich and comforting in winter can suddenly feel too heavy. By the time I have walked outside, taken the subway, and moved between the heat and strong indoor air-conditioning, I want my skincare to feel simple again.
That is why my summer visits to Olive Young are quite practical. I am not looking for the biggest routine or the most famous product on the shelf. I am looking for products that will make a hot day feel a little easier—and that I will actually want to use tomorrow morning.
If this is your first time shopping there, JUST KOREA also has a complete Olive Young Korea shopping guide covering store selection, promotions, popular categories, and practical shopping tips. This article is more personal: it is simply what I notice and use during summer as a Korean woman in my 30s.
My first stop is usually sunscreen
The first section I check is sunscreen.
That might sound obvious, but in summer the texture matters to me as much as the sun protection. I prefer sunscreen that spreads like a moisturizing lotion. I want it to feel comfortable while I am applying it, and I do not want to keep noticing it on my skin afterward.
If a sunscreen feels thick from the beginning, I already know I will hesitate to use enough of it. It may be a good product, but it is probably not the right summer product for me. The sunscreen I finish is usually the one that fits easily between my morning skincare and makeup.
I check texture and finish before deciding whether a sunscreen will feel comfortable in humid weather.
When I stand in front of the Olive Young sunscreen shelves, I look at words such as moisturizing, lightweight, and lotion-like. Then, if testers are available and store rules allow it, I pay attention to how the formula spreads and how my skin feels after a few minutes. A fresh first touch is not enough; I want to know whether the finish starts to feel heavy as it settles.
I also remind myself that “popular” and “comfortable for me” are not always the same thing.
I like tone-up sunscreen—but only when it stays light
On some summer mornings, I like using a tone-up product that also provides UV protection. It can make my face look a little brighter and more awake without adding another full layer of base makeup.
But I am careful here. A tone-up effect is not useful to me if the product feels stiff, dry, or too noticeable on my face. I still want it to move like skincare, not sit like a heavy cream.
My ideal summer tone-up sunscreen is light enough that I can forget about it after applying it. It should fit into my routine, rather than make the routine feel longer.
Of course, the finish that looks natural on me may look different on another skin tone. If you are shopping in Korea, testing the tone and texture before buying is more helpful than choosing only from a ranking or viral video.
The products I avoid when the weather is humid
In winter, I can appreciate a rich cream. In summer, I usually avoid thick, dense creams that do not leave a fresh finish.
This is not because rich products are bad. I just become very aware of them when the air already feels heavy. If my face feels sticky before I even leave home, I know I will not enjoy wearing makeup over it.
For me, summer skincare is less about adding more steps and more about removing unnecessary weight. I would rather use a few light layers that feel comfortable than force myself through a routine that looks impressive but does not suit the weather.
Sheet masks are part of my real summer routine
The next place I naturally walk toward is the sheet-mask section.
Honestly, there are weeks in summer when I use a sheet mask almost every day. It does not feel like a special spa treatment to me. It is a small, ordinary way to make my face feel cooler and more comfortable after a hot day.
The sheet-mask section is one of the first places I check during Korea’s hot summer.
I do not choose a mask only because the package is beautiful or because it is trending. In summer, I am usually drawn to masks that sound refreshing, soothing, or hydrating. I want something easy to use when I come home feeling warm and tired.
This is also why the sheet-mask aisle can be dangerous for me in a funny way. There are so many choices that it is easy to buy more than I need. I try to choose a small number first, use them, and then return for the ones I genuinely enjoyed.
My favorite summer trick happens while I dry my hair
My most personal summer beauty tip is not very elegant, but it is realistic.
After washing my hair, I put on a sheet mask and sit where I can feel the air conditioner or a fan. Then I dry my hair while wearing the mask.
I use a sheet mask to keep my face feeling cooler and more comfortable during Korea’s humid summer.
Drying long hair can make me feel hot all over again, especially after a shower. Doing both things at the same time keeps that part of my routine from feeling so uncomfortable. My face feels cooler, my hair gets dry, and I am not adding another separate step to the morning.
In my experience, my makeup also sits more smoothly afterward. I am not saying that this will work exactly the same way for everyone, and I do not leave the mask on longer than the directions recommend. It is simply one of those habits I discovered because it works well for my own summer mornings.
It may sound a little funny, but sometimes the beauty tips we continue using are not the glamorous ones. They are the ones that make a rushed, humid morning feel easier.
Deodorant wipes are a small but useful summer item
Another product I actually use is deodorant wipes.
They are not the most exciting thing in my shopping basket, but they are practical. I like products that are easy to carry and use when I have been outside for a long time or need to freshen up before meeting someone.
Summer beauty is often discussed as if it is only about the face. For me, feeling clean and comfortable during the day matters just as much. A small pack of wipes can sometimes be more useful than another skincare product I bought because the packaging was pretty.
A promotion is only useful if I will finish the product
Olive Young planning sets and 1+1 promotions can be very tempting. I understand why travelers become excited when they see them. I also stop and look.
But before buying, I ask myself one simple question: Will I really use both?Olive Young promotions can look tempting, but I still ask whether I will actually use both products.
Two products are not a bargain if I do not enjoy using the first one. This is especially true for sunscreen, because texture is so personal. If I am trying something new, I would rather buy a manageable amount than fill my bathroom with products that feel wrong in summer.
Once I know a product suits me, a larger set can make sense. Until then, I try not to let the discount make the decision for me.
What I would tell a foreign friend shopping at Olive Young
If a friend visiting Korea asked me what to buy for summer, I would not begin with a long list of product names.
I would first ask how she wants her skin to feel.
Does she like a dewy finish, or will that feel sticky in humidity? Does she want a tone-up effect, or would she prefer a sunscreen that disappears on the skin? Will she actually use sheet masks, or is she buying them only because they look very Korean?
Those questions matter more than buying whatever is currently at the top of a ranking.
My own summer basket is simple:
a lotion-like sunscreen that I will happily apply every morning;
a lightweight tone-up SPF for days when I want fewer makeup layers;
a few sheet masks that make my face feel refreshed;
portable deodorant wipes for long, humid days.
And I usually leave the thick creams for a cooler season.
The products that work for me may not be perfect for every visitor. Skin type, skin tone, climate, and personal preference all matter. But if you begin with texture and daily comfort, Olive Young becomes much easier to shop. You stop trying to buy everything and start noticing what could actually fit into your life.
My summer routine is really about feeling comfortable
As I get older, I feel less pressure to follow every beauty trend. I still enjoy looking at new products, but I know myself better now.
In a Korean summer, I want sunscreen that feels like lotion, a sheet mask that makes a hot evening more comfortable, and small products that help me feel fresh while I am out. I do not need my routine to be impressive. I need it to be something I can keep doing even when the weather makes me tired.
That is what I look for at Olive Young: not the perfect shelf, but the few products that make summer feel lighter.
